    Gulbranson, Eilif
The Cock was written for Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag and their CD-release “Light” in 1989. I chose the Norwegian tune “Hanen stend på stabburshella” (“The Cock”), a tune which is widely used in Norway. When the CD, conducted by Alan Whitington was released in 1990, the song was recognized as a folk tune. This is not correct as the music was written by Eilif Gulbranson (1897-1958). However, the song is written in a typical Norwegian folk music style, here arranged in a modern style for brass band.

In the middle section one or more of the older musicians blows a fiery solo, while the cool beginners "beat boxes". The beat boxing in the middle section fits well with a simple dance with the beginners. Simplified parts for the “groove-instruments” are included. The parts for these are euphonium, Eb bass and Bb bass.

Salmen innledet en bredere interesse for irsk fromhetsliv og musikktradisjon i norsk kirkeliv. Den ble senere gjendiktet til bokmål av Eivind Skeie, og fremført av Hanne Krogh på hennes plate Vestavind (1998).
