The Cock was written for Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag and their CD-release “Light” in 1989. I chose the Norwegian tune “Hanen stend på stabburshella” (“The Cock”), a tune which is widely used in Norway. When the CD, conducted by Alan Whitington was released in 1990, the song was recognized as a folk tune. This is not correct as the music was written by Eilif Gulbranson (1897-1958). However, the song is written in a typical Norwegian folk music style, here arranged in a modern style for brass band.

Funky Kidz is a cool tune that fits perfectly to showcase the beginners as soloists with the band. The solo part is easy to learn "by ear", while a stylish bass ostinato makes it fun for the band to accompany the youngest! In the middle section one or more of the older musicians blows a fiery solo, while the cool beginners "beat boxes". The beat boxing in the middle section fits well with a simple dance with the beginners. Simplified parts for the “groove-instruments” are included. The parts for these are euphonium, Eb bass and Bb bass.

    Haagenrud, Henry
Amongst Henry Haagenrud’s numerous compositions for accordion, Green Pastel is perhaps the most famous. This waltz, characterized by Haagenrud's style of playing, has a rather continental feel to it and quite a few Norwegian accordeonists have played it over the years. Perhaps due to its 'international' sound, it has also found its way to Russian and French performers. This arrangement for military band and accordeon soloist was written by Svein H. Giske for a concert in 1998 with virtuoso performer Håvard Svendsrud and Forsvarets Musikkorps Vestlandet (now: The Norwegian Navy Band Bergen). After that, it has been performed by several soloists and bands, amongst them Øivind Farmen and The Norwegian Air Force Band.

As a composer, Peterson-Berger was very conservative and did not appreciated the new american entertainment music at all. Therefore, one might assume that this piece is an ironic interpretation of what he calls ”idiotic jazz”. American Dance is a slow, but still dance-like piece which differ from other pieces in the same genre by several key changes. Maybe it it his great knowledge about the music of Richard Wagner that shines through.
